How to serve carbs to J: Noodles, Pasta, Rice

When J started his BLW journey, we wanted to introduce some fortified grains in his diet.
With pastas and noodles, we always doubled the cooking time to ensure the pasta is soft enough for him to gum and swallow.

His initial pastas of choice were spaghetti and macaroni. However, it seemed like he got tired of picking up small pieces of the macaroni because his appetite grew and perhaps the novelty wore off after eating it for a while. We moved to rotini and fusilli pastas and he's been able to eat more! It's easier to hold and release in his mouth!

We love noodles and rice in our household. It's our staple. If we don't have time to cook rice, we would cook noodles. Noodles in soup, or noodles in sauce. It's so quick and easy. Not the most nutritious but at least our tummies are filled when we need some food in a short time.

With rice, we always mixed 50/50 of brown rice and white rice and we use a rice cooker. We would roll the rice in an 0.75-1inch ball for J to pick up and pop in his mouth. Sometimes, we shred salmon or cod and mix it into the rice so that he would eat some more protein in his diet.

As for noodles, be CAREFUL of salt! Especially udons and flat noodles. They taste so good because of how much salt is included. You can look for low sodium frozen udons in Asian supermarkets. The thicker noodles are easier for J to eat, and thus J will eat more of it. I usually cut up the noodles 4 inch sections because he's able to slurp the noodles (haha so cute). sometimes, he's not feeling like slurping, so I'd cut up the noodles even shorter and pile it up so that he can pick up a lot in his hand and pop into his mouth.
